Hanoi Train Street: What to Know Before You Visit 🚂

This is Hanoi’s famous Train Street! And here’s what you need to know before you go. A train passing through a narrow residential street might sound strange, but this is a normal part of life around Hanoi Train Street.

Houses, cafés, and railway tracks all share the same tight space, creating one of Hanoi’s most unusual attractions. But how did this railway end up running right through the middle of a neighborhood? Why is the train still operating? And with tourists standing so close to the tracks, have there been any accidents?

Before I tell you about my experience visiting this Train Street, let’s take a quick look at how this unusual place came to be.

Hanoi Train Street is not a railway built for tourists. The railway dates back to 1902, during the French colonial period, and houses gradually developed around the tracks as Hanoi grew.

For years, local residents simply lived alongside the railway, with trains passing through their neighborhood several times a day. It only became a popular tourist attraction much later, when photos and videos of trains passing incredibly close to the houses spread online. Small cafés then started appearing along the tracks, turning the area into the famous Train Street visitors know today.

So, why hasn’t Hanoi Train Street simply been shut down?

The railway is part of Hanoi’s active railway network, so it isn’t just a tourist attraction that can easily be closed. Trains still use this line as part of the city’s wider rail system.

The problem is the tourism around it. As Train Street became popular, cafés and visitors started getting very close to the tracks. Authorities have introduced closures, barriers, and other restrictions over the years because of safety concerns.

So even if you see cafés and tourists there, don’t assume you can freely walk along the tracks. Access and enforcement can change, so always follow the latest local instructions when you visit.

When I visited Hanoi Train Street, I entered from the main road shown in the photos above. If you’re visiting for the first time, I recommend using this entrance rather than one of the side entrances.

From the side entrances, you may encounter someone who approaches you and tries to take you to their café. If you want to watch the train from a café, choose one, take a seat, and order a drink while waiting for the train.

Keep in mind that Train Street is an active railway, so access can vary depending on the situation. Follow instructions from café staff or local authorities, and never step onto the tracks when the train is approaching.

The main reason most people visit Hanoi Train Street is, of course, to see the train pass right through the narrow street.

Before you go, check the latest train schedule because the timing can change. When I visited, the train was scheduled to pass at around 5:45 PM.

Don’t plan your visit around an old schedule you found online. It’s better to check the timing as close to your visit as possible so you don’t end up waiting for a train that isn’t coming when you expect it.

If you want to watch the train from one of the cafés, I recommend arriving around 5 PM for an evening train.

Getting there early gives you more time to find a café and choose a comfortable spot before the area gets busy. You can also order a drink and relax while waiting instead of arriving just before the train.

For me, part of the experience was simply sitting at the café and watching the street around me slowly get ready for the train.

Hanoi Train Street can be dangerous if you get too close to the tracks. There have been several incidents involving tourists getting too close to passing trains.

In September 2022, a foreign tourist was reportedly struck by a train while taking photos near the tracks and suffered a minor injury. More recently, other tourists have also had close calls after standing on or near the tracks while trains were approaching.

These incidents show that the danger is real. The railway is still active, and there is very little space between the train and the surrounding buildings. So, don’t step onto the tracks for a photo, even if you see other people doing it.

When I visited, I stayed in the café area and followed the staff’s instructions when the train approached. This let me enjoy the experience without taking unnecessary risks.

Then comes the moment everyone is waiting for.

When you first see the train approaching, the atmosphere changes almost immediately. People move back, café staff make sure everyone is in a safe position, and suddenly the space that looked like an ordinary narrow street becomes a railway again.

The train passes incredibly close, and the sound makes the whole experience feel even more intense. It’s also much quicker than you might expect, so I recommend putting your camera down for a moment and actually enjoying it.

For me, this was the most memorable part of visiting Hanoi Train Street.

While you’re waiting for the train, why not enjoy a cold Hanoi beer at one of the cafés?

I grabbed a beer while waiting, which made the whole experience feel even more relaxed. And because I wanted something to remember the visit by, I also picked up a little Train Street beer cap as a souvenir.

It’s nothing fancy, but sometimes these small things make a travel experience more memorable. 😂

If you’re planning your own visit, here are the things I’d keep in mind:

• Be prepared for crowds. The area can become busy around popular train times.
• Check the train schedule before you go. Train times can change, so don’t rely only on an old schedule.
• Enter from the main road. This can make your first visit easier and less confusing.
• Arrive early. Give yourself enough time to find a café and settle in before the train arrives.
• Follow café staff instructions. They will help prepare everyone when the train is approaching.
• Stay off the tracks. This is an active railway, not a photo prop.
• Don’t focus only on your camera. The train passes quickly, so enjoy the experience too.
• Bring some cash. It’s useful for drinks or small souvenirs, depending on the café.

For me, yes — Hanoi Train Street is worth experiencing, especially if you’ve never seen a train pass through such a narrow residential street before.

The train itself only takes a short time to pass, but the experience starts before that: finding a café, waiting with other visitors, hearing the staff prepare everyone, and then suddenly seeing the train come through right in front of you.

Just remember that this is still an active railway. Stay in a safe area, follow local instructions, and enjoy the experience responsibly.
