Halong Bay Cruise Routes: Which one is better? 🛥️

Planning a trip to Halong Bay? Before booking your cruise, it’s important to understand the different Halong Bay cruise routes available. Many travelers don’t realize that there are actually two main routes, and each one visits different caves, kayaking spots, and attractions.

Choosing the right itinerary can completely change your experience, especially if there’s a specific place you don’t want to miss. In this guide, I’ll compare Route 1 and Route 2, share my own experience, and help you decide which Halong Bay cruise route is the better choice for your trip.

Many travelers assume that all Halong Bay cruises follow the same itinerary, but that’s not the case. Depending on the cruise you choose, you’ll visit different caves, kayaking areas, and attractions.

If there’s a specific place you want to see, such as Sung Sot Cave or Thien Cung Cave, it’s important to check the itinerary before booking.

I didn’t realize there were two main cruise routes until I visited Halong Bay. While both routes showcase the bay’s stunning limestone islands and emerald waters, each one offers a different experience.

In the next sections, I’ll explain what you can expect from Route 1 and Route 2, along with my experience on each route, so you can decide which one is best for your trip

Route 2 is the itinerary I found most often when booking cruises online. Many cruise operators include this route because it visits Halong Bay‘s most famous attractions, making it a popular choice for first-time visitors.

If you’re booking online, there’s a good chance your cruise will follow this itinerary, but it’s still worth checking the details before confirming your reservation.

Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is one of the largest and most famous caves in Halong Bay. After climbing a short staircase, you’ll enter a series of spacious chambers filled with impressive limestone formations that have formed over thousands of years.

Because it’s one of the bay’s most popular attractions, it can get busy, especially during peak travel seasons. Even so, its massive size and unique rock formations make it one of the highlights of Route 2.

One of the highlights of Route 2 is kayaking through Luon Cave. To reach the hidden lagoon, you’ll paddle through a low limestone arch before entering calm waters surrounded by towering cliffs.

The peaceful scenery makes it feel like a completely different part of Halong Bay. Out of all the activities on my cruise, this was my favorite kayaking experience. If you enjoy being close to nature, I highly recommend not skipping this stop.

The final stop on Route 2 is Ti Top Island. Visitors can spend their time relaxing on the sandy beach or climbing the steps to the island’s famous viewpoint. The hike is short but quite steep, and from the top you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Halong Bay’s limestone islands.

I decided to skip the hike because of limited time, but many travelers say the viewpoint is one of the best photo spots in Halong Bay.

💡 Quick Tip: Booking Route 1 at the port? Arrive before 8 AM to secure your cruise.

Route 1, on the other hand, is often easier to book directly at Halong International Cruise Port. It takes you to Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, and Ba Hang for kayaking, offering a slightly different experience with its own unique attractions.

Thien Cung Cave was my favorite limestone cave in Halong Bay. As soon as I stepped inside, I was amazed by the enormous chambers and beautiful limestone formations.

Colorful lighting highlights the stalactites and stalagmites, making the cave feel even more impressive. If you enjoy exploring natural caves, I think this is one of the best places to visit on Route 1.

If you’re taking Route 1, make sure you don’t miss Dau Go Cave. Unfortunately, I did.

remember its located in the Dau go Island, the same location as Thien Cung Cave. our operator didn’t tell us before hand so we just explore on our own and we missed it.

The cave is known for its unusual stalactites and stalagmites, with formations that resemble different shapes and structures. As you go deeper into the cave, the natural light becomes weaker, creating a darker and more mysterious atmosphere.

So if Dau Go Cave is included in your route, don’t make the same mistake I did—go inside!

Route 1 also includes a kayaking stop at Ba Hang. Paddling through the calm waters gives you another perspective of Halong Bay’s towering limestone islands.

Compared with the busier attractions, this part of the route feels more peaceful, making it a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery before returning to the cruise.

If you’re staying in Hanoi, booking a day tour is the easiest option. Most tours include hotel pickup, round-trip transportation, and the cruise, making it convenient if you’re short on time.

A friend of mine joined a day trip from Hanoi with her family and had a great time exploring Halong Bay. Their cruise followed Route 1 and included a buffet, so they could enjoy the scenery, visit the attractions, and have a meal on board without having to plan everything themselves. She found the experience convenient and enjoyable, especially for traveling with family.

I stayed in Halong Bay, so I boarded my cruise directly at Halong International Cruise Port. A friend of mine joined a day trip from Hanoi and found it very convenient, so the better choice depends on where you’re staying rather than which option is objectively better.

If it’s your first visit to Halong Bay, Route 2 is the easiest choice because it includes several of the bay’s most famous attractions. However, Route 1 shouldn’t be overlooked. Thien Cung Cave was my favorite limestone cave, and the quieter itinerary offers a different side of Halong Bay.

If your schedule allows, experiencing both routes gives you the most complete experience.
